In 2002, after a career in geology, business, education and research that spanned 18 years, I completed a M.Sc. in Occupational Therapy. I practice Occupational Therapy and teach mindfulness programs at the Vancouver Coastal Mental Health and Substance Use Program. I am an Advisor and Mentor for the UCLA Training in Mindfulness Facilitation Program, and a Mentor in MBSR and MBCT for the Centre for Mindfulness Studies, and also offer mindfulness based courses to the general public in group and individual formats. In Fall, 2018, I will be teaching MBSR classes for Langara College.
Committed to lifelong learning and a personal daily meditation practice, I regularly attend silent meditation retreats and other mindfulness-based and cognitive behavioral therapy trainings. Passionate about teaching mindfulness, I strongly believe in the ability of individuals to find their own wisdom and strength in healing. I have witnessed this healing while facilitating over 60 eight-week courses since 2006 including:
- Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs)
- Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
- Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
- Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention
- Mindful Way Through Smoking, and
- Introductory Mindfulness Meditation courses
Using mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral techniques, I have worked extensively with individuals to help improve functioning in daily activities, and manage anxiety, depression, stress, addictions and psychosis. I have co-facilitated mindfulness courses for health care professionals, and clients at private clinics in Vancouver. I believe in increasing access to the transformative power of mindfulness among those who have the least access.
I completed the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Training in Mindfulness Facilitation program, and am a UCLA Affiliated Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs) instructor. I am a Certified MBCT and MBSR Teacher through the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Mindfulness Based Professional Training Institute. As a Clinical Faculty member at the University of British Columbia School of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, I enjoy introducing students to the applications of mindfulness and compassion in health care, and am also involved in mindfulness research with students and faculty at the School.
For me, the practice of mindfulness is an active engagement with life in its fullness.
